Disappeared Umbrella: A Design Innovation for a Rainy Day

Avoid wet clothes and the environment

The inspiration for the Disappeared Umbrella came from a simple observation of the inconveniences caused by wet umbrellas in public spaces. Li Xuesong and Cao Weizhi noticed how water droplets from umbrellas would wet seats, make floors slippery, and even dampen the clothes of other passengers. To address these issues, they set out to create an umbrella that not only kept users dry but also minimized the impact on the environment and those around them.

What sets the Disappeared Umbrella apart is its innovative integration of a case and handle. The case, which is often lost or forgotten, is cleverly incorporated into the design as the handle. This not only solves the problem of misplaced cases but also provides a more ergonomic and comfortable grip for users. The lengthened handle ensures a secure hold, even in windy conditions.

When it's time to pack up, users simply fold and fasten the cover, push it into the handle, and screw the cap back on. This ingenious design allows for easy storage and avoids the hassle of carrying a wet umbrella. The cap ensures that any remaining water is contained, preventing it from dripping onto clothes or floors. Plus, the water collected in the case can be repurposed to water plants at home, promoting sustainability.

The Disappeared Umbrella is not just a practical solution; it also embodies a positive attitude towards life. Manufactured using molding techniques, the Disappeared Umbrella is made from high-quality materials such as PP, HDPE, and silicone. Its dimensions, measuring at Width 50mm x Depth 50mm x Height 230mm, ensure a compact and portable design that can easily fit into bags or backpacks.

The Disappeared Umbrella project was conducted from February to May 2016 in Shenyang. The design team, consisting of Li Xuesong, Cao Weizhi, Yan Yueming, Chen Qi, and Zhao Hongyuan, overcame various creative and technical challenges to bring this innovative design to life. Their dedication and attention to detail resulted in a product that simplifies the rainy day experience for users worldwide.

The Disappeared Umbrella has received recognition for its ingenuity and impact. In 2017, it was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Fashion and Travel Accessories category. This prestigious accolade is bestowed upon designs that demonstrate outstanding creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life.
